Now with twice the amnesia! Do Anjaane

Despite the flippant post title here, I really did find this movie very engaging and interesting. My thoughts are over at Desicritics.

Does anyone know who this guy is? He looks so familiar.

Also, Amitabh stays in the Oberoi Grand in Kolkata, which is where I got to meet Arshad Warsi. Here's a photo of Rekha running out of the door,

and while I don't think this is the exact entrance we stood in while he was kind enough to chat with me for a few minutes, I was still pretty geeked to see the hotel in a movie.

The dance teacher is played by Jagdeep.

One of the many things I liked about this movie were the "classical" dance numbers in which a chubby Rekha hops about the stage. Rather endearing.
Thanks Anil! And now that I have done a bit of research, I learn that he is the father of Jaaved Jaffrey. I'll be sure to look out for him in movies - and I'm bound to see him, since he seems to have done over 200.

I really enjoyed those songs too, especially the one when she dances as Vishnu in a female form tempting two demon king brothers to fight each other. (I tried to find information about this story online but got nowhere using the names of the demons in the subtitles, Suna and Upsunda.) I was so impressed at how the dance told the story - and paralleled the plot - and it looked especially cool at the end when she changes back into standard-looking Vishnu.

Beth: The subtitles are a bit misleading. The dance depicts the slaying of the asura brothers Sunda and Upasunda. In the dance, Rekha plays Tillotama, a celestial maiden (apsara). Thanks to a boon from Brahma, the asuras could not be killed by anything or anyone except each other. Tillotama was created by the divine architect Vishwakarma (~ Hephaestus/Vulcan) to get the brothers to quarrel. She's not an incarnation of Vishnu. The original story is found in the the first chapter of the Mahabharata.

Aaah, Rekha. Before she learnt how to do that killer eye makeup.

But there are selfish and shallow women, aren't there -- and bad mothers too. I salute a hindi movie that actually shows a "heroine as both.
