Well, more memorable, anyway, and I have a decreasing tolerance for Karisma these days. Shashi vs Aamir, though? That's a very tough call. I think this one is a bit more contained and less ridiculous, which puts its actors in a better position from the get-go.

dushyant - you're quite right, I've seen very, very few movies made before 1975. They're harder for me to find (and I'm not on netflix yet, so I'm limited to what I can get at the two video stores in town or feel like buying). But I'm definitely interested in learning a lot more about older films, and I'm grateful for recommendations - and will get to them some day, I promise!

akshayefan - thanks for sharing your take on this movie - it's good to hear from others on this one. And you're right about the lack of focus on our boy lately. I think I've seen about half his movies, and I think there are only three left that I've ever heard anything good about (Mohabbat, Doli Saja Ke Rakhna, and Love You Hamesha). (Plus Gandhi My Father, of course.) So those are on my list, but until I go on a shopping spree, my supply is tapped out. I do have his Koffee with Karan episode downloaded and will get to it sooner or later - probably later, because I hate talk shows and not even the promise of Akshaye is strong enough to get me to sit down and watch this when I have a stack of movies to choose from. :)Beth Loves Bollywoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05540154833326987567noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15977843.post-42646460978688372742007-08-24T04:39:00.000-05:002007-08-24T04:39:00.000-05:00The audience remains the same. What does raja Hindustani have? Still, it became a super duper hit! You don't have to feel bad abt being brutal about these kind of regressive features.

Still, one can't help but notice that you are totally concentrating on Shashi's movies. you have all but forgotten our poor Akshaye.akshayefanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14436391850561844858noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15977843.post-7305744803561501012007-08-23T07:32:00.000-05:002007-08-23T07:32:00.000-05:00Hi Beth,Sometimes I feel that sometime you litrall...Hi Beth,

Sometimes I feel that sometime you litrally watch films which a common Indian movigoer will reject from the word go.

I do not mean JJPK, some movies which you review in detail, never been noticed by audiance here.

Though I like to add that you never mentioned any Raj Kapoor films. Aawara, Shri 420, Chori Chori, Bobby, Daag, Kal aaj aur kal, Mera Naam Jokar, Jis Desh Me Ganga Beheti Hai, Boot Polish, Ab Dilli Door Nahin, Prem Rog, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Barsaat, Aag, Jagte Raho, Teesri Kasam .. and many more..

Here is the best you can get out of Bollywood.

The second man is missing from your world is Kishore Kumar...Padosan, Jhumroo, Chali ka naam Gadi, Half Ticket, Mr. X in bombay.. and a lot of them...

Similarly you did miss many Dev Anand's classics and Mehmood's Antics. Plus the list misses a complete Sunil Dutt - Manoj Kumar - Dilip Kumar - Anil Kapoor - Madhuri - Shreedevi and other's best performed movies...

Anyways,.... Chak De India! will be a treat for you. I had my mouthfull of SRK last monday.. a bit late though.. and will have another healping today and over the weekend!

Love ya..!An Indianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09440622475522049112noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15977843.post-38815340614319644222007-08-21T11:32:00.000-05:002007-08-21T11:32:00.000-05:00'm sure the message is more complex than "women sh...'m sure the message is more complex than "women should give up their lives in order to get married."

Nope, I think you got it right: that's pretty much it. Well maybe they would have roughed it out in 1965, but in 2007 I would give it 2 years.

Was it better than Raja Hindustani? I thought Amir Khan's character was a jerk in that movie.ggophttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13152025930955161430noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15977843.post-1175551661967808042007-08-19T09:36:00.000-05:002007-08-19T09:36:00.000-05:00Uh oh, I don't remember the clothes joke - I hope ...Uh oh, I don't remember the clothes joke - I hope you will remind me!

It is a problematic resolution, I won't deny that. I can't explain why I am sometimes more forgiving of problematic subtexts than others.

I would have liked the film more if it had ended with the two of them realizing that it would never work and parting, bittersweetly, for ever. Raj tried to walk full-on into her world, and it didn't work (not that anybody there tried to help him, quite the opposite in fact!). There's no reason to expect that her walking full-on into his world is going to work any better.Filmi Geekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03452657736759131107noreply@blogger.com
